Newsweek Wins Seven Photography and Illustration Awards

Newsweek, a premier weekly news magazine owned by IBT Media, today announced that it has won photography and illustration awards from both the National Press Photographers Association and The Society of Publication Designers.

The Society of Publication Designers awarded Newsweek with two merit awards in their Pub 50 competition which recognizes prestigious editorial design:

The National Press Photographers Associated awarded Newsweek with five awards in their Best of Photojournalism Awards which attract the most talented professionals in still, video, multimedia and editing each year:

  • First place for Best Use of Photography by Magazines
  • Runner up for Magazine Recurring Feature or Series for "Big shots"
  • Honorable mention for Magazine Picture Editor of the Year for Michael Ip
  • Honorable mention for Magazine Story Opener for "After the Gold Rush" and "The Last of the Tuskers"

"Magazines, like news sites, have to keep iterating to survive. When we returned to print as a premium product, with better paper stock and a higher price tag, we also thought it was time for an aesthetic makeover," said Jim Impoco, Editor in Chief of Newsweek. "We like to showcase our design and photography chops, and are delighted and humbled by the recognition Newsweek's efforts has received from its peers in those worlds. A visual scoop can be every bit as compelling as a text scoop."
